Professional Highlights
- Thomas Albert has served as music director and conductor for more than eighty musicals and revues during Shenandoahs academic year seasons and for the Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, most recently for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Evita, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Robber Bridegroom, Footloose, Cats, Sweeney Todd, Beauty and the Beast, Chicago, Tintypes, The Most Happy Fella, Seussical and Carousel, as well as for concert performances of Titanic, City of Angels, Allegro, A Little Night Music, Of Thee I Sing and Follies. In addition to his conducting duties, he teaches the American Musical Theatre history course.
- For the theatre, he has composed incidental music to several plays, including the Shenandoah productions of We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Dark of the Moon, The Crucible, and The Lark, as well as the Cincinnati College-Conservatory production of Angels in America, Part One: The Millenium Approaches, commissioned by eighth blackbird. With librettist Lindé Hayen Herman, he composed a one-act opera, Lizbeth, based on the legend of Lizzie Borden.
- As an active composer for nearly four decades, he has seen his concert music performed throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Brazil, Japan and Korea. Commissions include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Charles Ives Center for American Music, the Relâche Ensemble of Philadelphia, the 21st Century Consort of Washington DC, the Washington Saxophone Quartet and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. Two of his works, "A Maze (With Grace)" and "Devils Rain," are included on the Relâches CD, On Edge. His best-known work, Thirteen Ways was commissioned by eighth blackbird and is the title work of the groups first CD for Cedille Records. The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble's new CD includes his Night Music, composed for the group's 30th anniversary season in 2006.
